Conditions

Children should be supervised by an adult at all times whilst using their go-kart.

When building the go-kart, please cut all the bolts right back to the nuts, round all the corners of the wood and sand off the splinters. It is advisable to use some sort of braking system as the course is set on a slight hill.

Building the Cart

It might help if you adhere to some of the following when designing your cart …

Yours Kart needs to:
• Be capable of being steered
• Utilise some form of mechanism to provide braking power
• Have no propulsion unit or system of any kind
• Be strong enough to last the competition!
• Be capable of running on a grass surface
• Have no sharp or protruding corners, edges or objects liable to cause injury or damage

A typical soap-box cart is made of steel , and has 4 wheels , arranged as a fixed rear axle , and a steerable front beam axle - usually with a very simple single central pivot . A seat is arranged at the back, although more sophisticated designs might employ a fully-enclosed body. The types of wheels employed vary according to what can be obtained easily - wheels from baby carriages, pushchairs, prams, and discarded bicycles  being common. Steering is typically actuated using a rope connected to the ends of the steerable beam (which can then double as a useful manual pulling device).

Soap-box carts are unpowered, and are either pushed by willing helpers, or are run down a suitable slope. Races will usually take place downhill and the most efficient and skillfully driven cart will win - gravity  applying equally to all.

The Start

All drivers will be allowed a ‘push’ start by One chosen person from the top of Race Hill. The person ‘push’ starting the Go-Kart must not cross the official start line (which will be clearly marked out by 2 lines). Should the person ‘push’ starting the Go-Kart cross the official line the driver will be allowed a re-start. A maximum of 2 restarts will be allowed in any one race, after that the driver will be eliminated from that race (but can re enter).

Drivers can enter as many times as they like by paying the race fee of £1.00 per race and can enter as many categories as appropriate.
